Hey Laura,

I saw the press release for this "performance," too.
However, the press release that *you* cite seems to
have been written *sarcastically* by someone named
Tim Jeeves, in response to the actual performer's
(Mark McGowan's) press release, which I cite below.
In short, Mark McGowan is doing this "seriously," as
an "environmentally conscious" artist. Is he the
same guy who threatened to drown some kittens at the
TATE a while ago? I wouldn't be surprised.

Anyhow, I googled McGowan just now to see if he's an
actual artist/person, and apparently he is. Click on
the first link below for other examples of his modes
of creative protest and engagement with social issues.

Truth be told, he *does* sound a bit on the verge of
"really fucking stupid," but I would hate for anyone
to quote me on this, since someone out there might
think I am being sarcastic, and that is apparently a
no-no on these JISC forums. So NO: I am *not* being
sarcastic when I agree with Tim Jeeves that Mark
McGowan's upcoming piece is "uninspired and dull
performance art environmentally stupid, and just
plain stupid, like real fucking stupid."

I think that pretty much sincerely and
unsarcastically sums it up. But what do I know?

BTW: The answer to your question about "Where's my
Prozac" is that it is probably in your drinking
water, thanks to all the people who take that
medication and excrete it. But that's only in the
UK, of course: America shares no water ways, oceans,
or other aquatic passages with the UK, as we all know.

Here's the stuff on Mark McGowan's past performance art:

http://www.culturewars.org.uk/2005-01/mcgowan.htm

And here is his actual press release about the
RUNNING TAP project:

‘THE RUNNING TAP’ press release june 2005
In an extra ordinary art performance environmentally
conscious artist Mark McGowan is intending to turn
on a cold water tap in the House Gallery in
Camberwell, London and leave it running for one year
wasting 15 million litres of water.

The event will start on Tuesday 28th June 2005 at 10am.
On average 2 litres are dispersed every 10 seconds
from the gallery’s tap.
If bottled and stacked from floor to ceiling it
would be enough water to fill several supermarket
megastores.

McGowan says, ‘Basically its an art piece for people
to come and look at and enjoy aesthically, it is
also a comment on a social and environment issue.'
The ‘Running Tap’, can be viewed most days from
1pm-6pm or by appointment.
