University of Nottingham
Institute for the Study of Genetics, Biorisks & Society (IGBiS)
Multidisciplinary Assessment of Technology Centre for Healthcare (MATCH)
Social Science Research Fellow
Understanding the clinical application and adoption of tissue engineering
Applications are invited for the above post in the Institute for the Study of Genetics, Biorisks and Society (IGBiS) and the Multidisciplinary Assessment of Technology Centre for Healthcare (MATCH). IGBiS carries out specialist research on the social, legal, ethical and cultural implications of developments in biosciences and biotechnology. MATCH aims to support the healthcare technology sector and its user communities by creating methods to assess the value of technologies from concept through to mature product.
The successful candidate will undertake social science research on an EPSRC funded project examining the way in which applications for tissue engineered products are emerging and how they are being adopted into clinical practice. This is part of a large EPSRC funded interdisciplinary award on the development of tissue engineering/regenerative medicine and will involve close collaboration with researchers working on stem cell biology, bioengineering, the management of technology, and health economics. The research project will focus on particular case study applications of tissue engineering in regenerative medicine. In particular, it will survey the products currently on the market or in late stage development, map academic-industry collaborations in the UK, analyse the needs of clinical users, and assess the main factors shaping the adoption and acceptability of tissue engineered products. Duties will include analysing scientific and social science literature, survey work and conducting semi-structured interviews, as well as contributing to written reports and publications.
Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant subject, to include sociology, medical sociology, science and technology studies, and health services research. Postdoctoral experience of undertaking empirical research and some knowledge of biology is highly desirable.
Salary will be within the range £19,460 - £27,116 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. This post is available from 1 September 2005 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of three years. The successful candidate will be based mainly in the MATCH cluster, but will spend time each week in IGBiS.
