medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. June) is the feast day of:
Quirinus (d. 308) Bishop Quirinus of Siscia (somewhere around
Croatia) fled to escape the Great Persecution, but was captured and
refused to perform a sacrifice to the state gods on demand. So he
was drowned in the Raab River.
Metrophanes (d. c. 325) Metrophanes was the first bishop of
Byzantium. Legend tells that his personal holiness was a major
factor in Constantine's decision to build Byzantium up into an
imperial capital.
Optatus of Milevis (d. c. 387) Optatus was an adult convert to
Christianity who became bishop of Milevis (Numidia). Gussie of Hippo
thought very highly of him. O. was a leading opponent of Donatism
and author of the influential and historically important treatise
*Against Parmenian the Donatist*.
Petroc (6th cent.) The Welsh Petroc became a monk and went to
Ireland to study, along with some companions. They then moved to
Cornwall and settled at Lanwethinoc. Legend tells that P. eventually
made a pilgrimage to Rome and Jerusalem---and is said to have made it
as far as the Indian Ocean, where he lived for a while as a hermit on
an island. But he went back to Cornwall, built a chapel, established
a monastery, and became a hermit at Bodmir Moor.
