medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. June) is the feast day of:
Amandus (d. c. 431) This less-famous St. Amand became bishop of
Bordeaux in c. 400. He resigned the see in favor of St. Severinus,
but when S. died took over again.
Jerome of Vallombrosa (d. 1135) Jerome, a monk of Vallombrosa, lived
for 35 years as a hermit on a diet of bread and water.
Elizabeth of Schonau (d. 1164) Elizabeth entered the double
monastery of Schonau (near Bonn) at age 12 and was professed when
about 18. She lived a severely ascetic life and was rewarded in c.
1152 by the first of a long line of visions. For the rest of her
life E. had visions, ecstasies, prophecies, diabolical visitations
(some of which left her badly bruised), etc. E's brother Egbert
recorded her visions. She served as abbess from 1157 until her
death. E. hasn't been formally canonized.
Osanna of Mantua (blessed) (d. 1505) Osanna was the daughter of
wealthy parents; she got off to the mysticism business at a young
age, with a first vision at age five. As a teen, she rejected the
marriage her father arranged for her and became a Dominican tertiary.
She had the charming habit of falling into an ecstasy whenever God
was mentioned. Which must have been particularly interesting since
she was a popular spiritual director.
