I forgot to say, the best resource I've come across for educational films in
a long time is the Icarus catalogues of (predominantly) Latin American
stuff, which I would recommend to anybody to find good interesting films
about virtually any topic from a canon of really quite unknown LA stuff.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Since I got a lot of off-list
responses, I thought I'd put together a simple summary, which is here:

I think I missed a few, but will try to fill it out when I have time.
The most common recommendation was the Brazilian film "City of God," which
I actually have and have used in the classroom before. I confess I'm a
little ambivalent about the film.
