Call for papers
The materiality of individual lives
Society for Historical Archaeology Conference, Sacramento, CA
January 11-15, 2006
SHA's deadline for submissions is June 30, 2005 - so time is of the
essence!
I am putting together a session on material culture as it intersects with
notions of individuality. I am looking for participants who are thinking
about material culture that is owned or used by a single person and is
thus associated with an individual at some point in its uselife. The
interpretation of the artifactual material may focus on the artifacts
themselves or on the information the artifacts provide about the site
residents. I am interested in innovative and far-reaching interpretive
approaches. The acquisition and manipulation of personal items is an arena
within which individuals created and negotiated various aspects of
identity, and site inhabitants made choices that constituted and reflected
individuality and group affiliation on individual, household, and
community levels of scale. This session looks to engage with the
individual scale through classes of material culture, individual
artifacts, or via a subassemblage from a particular site. All time
periods, regions, and interpretive approaches are most welcome.
