Contrebia Leukade

Performance, Devising and Archaeology

31st July to August 13th 2005

Spiral -- La Rioja have just been awarded a major EU award to develop their
work in performance, theatre and archaeology over the next three years. The
project will culminate in a outdoor performance in 2007 for an expected
audience of 700 to 1000 per night.

In August 2005 Spiral is offering an opportunity for 17 participants to
develop further the work begun in the summer of 2004. A 12 day workshop run
by Spiral and a team of professional archaeologists and restorers will
combine a series of workshops on the archaeology of Contrebia with the
development of devised theatre performance.

The Project Site:

Outside the remote village of Aguilar del Rio Alhama, La Rioja, are located
the remains of an Iberian Celtic defensive city Contrebia Leukade. Probably
the most important site in Celtic Spain this mountain location has been
undergoing extensive excavation over the last decade. Gradually a superb
and surprising story is being revealed making archaeologists and historians
rethink the early history of Spain.

Over the past two years, alongside this team of archaeologists, Spiral has
been working on a series of theatre programmes, workshops and performances
which brings together the stories emerging from Contrebia Leukade with the
potential of the site as performance space.

In the summer of 2004 an international workshop event took place in which
theatre participants from around Europe spent a week researching Contrebia
Leukade and devising a piece of devised theatre. Throughout 2004-5 a series
of professional performances have been developed at the excavation itself
and in the nearby Centro de Interpretation.

The project will begin on Sunday 31st July with a supper and welcoming
event. The next day ( Monday 1 August ) will be spent in a theatre workshop
run by Chris Baldwin, director of Spiral and Fernando Barcebal, director of
NAQUE Spain, followed by a day investigating the archaeology of the site
led by Jose Antonio Vera, director of excavations at Contrebia Leukade.

Subsequent days will be dedicated to either theatre practice or
archaeological practice and include participation in excavation, pottery
restoration and opportunities to learn more about the complex history of
the Celts and Romans at Contrebia Leukade. These activities will be
complimented by a series of theatre workshops exploring approaches to
theatre devising, object manipulation and story development using Contrebia
as a starting point. Evenings are dedicated to visits to local places of
interest and outstanding natural beauty or simply relaxing and having a
drink and a meal under the stars.

The final evening of the workshop will take place at Contrebia Leukade
where, with the use of flare like torches to light up the excavation, an
evening of storytelling and theatre will be presented to the public.

Further details:

A team of six theatre practitioners and archaeologists are running the
project led by Chris Baldwin (visiting professor at Rose Bruford College)
and Jose Antonio Vega (Chair in Archaeology, University of Zaragoza) .

· Dates: 31st July to 13th August (13 nights)

· Cost: 750 Euros or 550 GBP's per person. Price includes workshop
participation, accommodation and food (please see additional points below)

· A team of five theatre and archaeology specialists will lead the
project.

· Meals include lunch and supper apart from two evenings where we
will visit local villages and eat supper in simple bars or restaurants.
Breakfast also excluded.

· Accommodation is based on two people sharing one room in either a
Casa Rural (rural hotel) or a series of village houses rented especially
for the project.

· Travel to Aguilar del Rio Alhama. We are happy to help you plan
your journey to this remote and spectacular setting. Getting to the village
by public transport is possible (bus service) although the trip needs
planning carefully.

Flights from the UK:

Flights from Stanstead to Zaragoza ( www.ryanair.com ) are daily and
extremely reasonably priced. Zaragoza to Aguilar is approximately 1.5 hours
by car.

Flights to Madrid and Bilbao (www.easyjet.com) are also daily and
inexpensive. Travel time by car to the village is approximately 3 hours
from both cities.

Please feel free to contact us at Spiral for any further advice.

· Participation in the project is determined by Curriculum Vitae.
Spiral reserves the right to decline a request to participate.
