It shows what a triple failure in O-level maths will do. Somebody who
received my earlier posting has sent me the following information that I
think is conclusive in trying to stop the email I sent which if you didn't
ignore iut will destroy the world apart from adding the energy crisis!
Apologies - and best wishes
Tom
I have had this petition various times: most recently from a friend who was
then sent (by a common friend she'd also sent it to) the useful response
below
From Nicky Graves Gregory
'I first received this email about 3 or 4 years ago. I've received it
probably 8 or 9 times since.
Lesson 1. Look for the DATE of any appeal.
Lesson 2. Maths: if everyone who received it passed it on to 2 people, then
from 1 email, there would be 2, then 2x2 (called 2 to the power 2), then
2x2x2 (2 to the power 3) etc. By the time there were 101 names on a given
list, there would be (2 to the 100) lists all with the 1st person's name on
it! And the 2nd person's name would be on (2 to the 99) lists etc. So the
lists would be useless as petitions. The only kinds of online petitions that
can be effective are ones where people record people's names once and once
only on a website.
I think 2 to the 100 is supposed to be zillions times more than the
estimated number of atoms in the universe - something like that.
I don't know what has happened in Brazil. I think it's been going on
happening, but this won't stop it. Friends of the Earth are still working on
it - long live the trees!
