University of Amsterdam
Faculty of Science
Chair of Human Computer Studies
The Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) is one of the leading institutions
for higher education in Europe. It participates in international science
networks, collaborating with major universities throughout the world.
The Faculty of Science consists of four departments, with 1,500
employees including researchers, lecturers, and 150 full- and part-time
professors operating in eleven research institutes. Each institute has
its own research programme that is financed by the faculty, the national
research council NWO, the government, EU and private enterprises.
Given the rapid developments in the field of Informatics, the University
of Amsterdam will establish a chair in the Informatics Institute for a

The field of the chair on human computer studies is defined by

and intelligence from networks of systems and humans, further defined by
such notions as the presentation of information, user modelling, novel
ways of interfacing, context-dependent communication, and evaluation of
interfacing. The new chair will lead the Human Computer Studies
Laboratory within the Informatics Institute. Other current topics in the
lab are in adaptive information management, ontologies, and in
distributed and federated databases.
The HCS-lab fits in the institute next to the other two labs for
Intelligent Systems (ISLA) focused on sensory, language and autonomous
information processing and for Computing, System architecture, and
Programming (CSP-Lab) focused on computational science, computer
architecture and foundations of programming. Good education is an
essential part of life at the UvA. It is to be organised in an
under-graduate and a graduate school with programs in the areas of ICT,
computer science, and AI. Currently, the HCS-lab is mostly associated
with the ICT program and secondarily with AI.
