Dear BACS-List members,
The Cultural Division, Taipei Representative Office in the UK, is a proud sponsor of an exhibition featuring the work of Chen Chieh-Jen: Echoes of a Historical Photograph (2002) at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, Liverpool, 24 June to 14 August, as part of an exhibition entitled The Agony and The Ecstasy. In connection with this exhibition, an event on 21 June at 6.30pm features "Artist Talk: Manray Hsu and Chen Chieh-jen in conversation."
The TRO writes: "These works are significant for exhibition in the current political climate, particularly in light of the crimes against humanity conducted during and post Iraq; the work provokes questions around how we relate to, consume and process aesthetics of horror, images of sublime human suffering (and whether this offers clues to redemption). The black and white film "Lingchi" transfixes the viewer, both through the seductive quality of the film and its meditation on the relationship between image and power, horror, ecstasy and religion. The award-winning and renowned Taiwanese artist's work was part of the Vancouver International Film Festival (2004) and this year Chen chieh-Jen is featured at the Venice Biennale."
