Dear Sue Thomas and Collegues
I'm Mel Woods, I Lecture in Time Based Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee and am also based in the Visual Research Centre at Dundee Contemporary Art (DCA).
My research covers 2 main topics: 1.The relationship between digital multimedia environments and traditional visual arts. This has the aim of developing works that create discourse between interpretation of sound, image and movement in the digital and traditional environments. 2. The relationship between language and communication and interactive environments, with particular reference to ongoing project 'sonic phonic'.
'Sonic Phonic' is investigating the visually abstract form of letters as symbols and exploring the possibilities of reinterpretation of phonetic sound to those visual forms. In addition how the immersive digital environment has the potential to lead to a cognative evolution in our understanding and processing of text, image and sound.
