Can we develop 'real' relationships online?
I just happened to read these statistics this weekend:
Here are the results from a recent workingwounded.com/ABCnews.com online
ballot:
Are virtual teams more or less productive?
--Much less productive, 24.4%
--About the same, 32.6%
--Much more productive, 42.8%
Is this the same as the development of 'real relationships' or do these
statistics imply that digitial life is more effecient than real LIFE
because we are not distracted by the human aspects of interaction?
I work at home and work with virtual teams around the country (USA) and
my primary collaborator is in Canada. She has worked for me for 2
years, every day - and we have only met twice. I would say it's a very
strong relationship - one of the best collaborations I have ever had. I
must admit that every once in a while I pick up the phone - because we
don't get our points across through instant messaging, and that gets
very frustrating. But most of the time it works.
