Call for papers for a conference on: 21ST CENTURY MOTHERHOOD: Change
Sponsored by the University of Houston Women’s Studies Program
Houston, TX October 20-22, 2005
Submission deadline: May 15, 2005
The conference will focus on the changing dynamics of motherhood in the 21st
century. Big changes are underway, many of which open new opportunities for
women to parent in the manner that best suits them and their children.
Others create new obstacles. And all are subject to dispute, as current
public debates indicate.
Issues addressed will include: the impact of biological research, including
health and fertility technologies that expand the group of mothers,
negotiating/resetting the work and family balance, shifting gender roles in
care taking, the adoption revolution, same-sex parenting, merged families,
single parenthood, the impact of corporate and economic structures on
motherhood and vice versa, childcare, the trend to “late-onset” motherhood,
and the maternal feminism movement.
Sociologists, scientists, historians, literary and cultural critics, medical
practitioners, mothers, poets, artists and others will gather in Houston
from across the nation to discuss the changing landscape of motherhood.
What new trends are visible in health, social and political spheres? What do
these changes mean for the welfare of women, children and the family? How
can policy be structured and implemented to best assist positive growth and
change? What aspects of traditional mothering should be nourished? How do
these changes intersect with historical patterns?
The conference represents the continuing effort of the Women’s Studies
program to raise questions and engage in thoughtful debate on issues of the
moment. The conference integrates scholarly work with community concerns and
is open to scholars, community members and practitioners.
