The Sigma Research web-site has been updated with a new Briefing Paper
called "It makes me sick: heterosexism, homophobia and the health of Gay men
and Bisexual men."
This short Briefing Paper considers the impact of heterosexism and
homophobia on the health and well-being of Gay men and Bisexual men. Before
reviewing existing research, it examines the meanings of the terms
heterosexism and homophobia and critiques the notion of internalised
homophobia. Subsequently, it summarises evidence on the impact that
experiences of victimisation have on mental health, suicide and substance
use within LGBT populations and among Gay men and Bisexual men in
particular. The Briefing Paper concludes with the recommendation that to
tackle homophobia and heterosexism effectively, health promoters need to
broaden the scope of their interventions.
The Briefing Paper was funded by Terrence Higgins Trust as part of the CHAPS
national gay men's HIV prevention programme.
