Dear All
Many thanks for all the responses I received relating to my email about an RMS Accreditation Scheme. The 'ground swell' of opinion would certainly suggest that it is worth the RMS looking into this topic.
General good and bad themes included:
* Accreditation could advance the Records Management profession by setting a standard for Records Managers. This could have a positive impact on presenting ourselves to the wider world, directing CPD training, and influencing the job market. It may also safe-guard the profession from rm 'cowboys' who can currently claim to be record managers without qualifications or experience.
* Accreditation could 'fill the gap' for those who work within RM but for whom the existing qualifications is inappropriate or do not feel that current accrediting/registering schemes are relevant to them.
* Accreditation is unecessary as there are already a number of qualification options available to records managers in the form of both post-graduate schemes e.g. Northumbria university, and recognition of CPD training and experience e.g. SoA Registration Scheme.
* Fears were expressed that a suitable Accreditation scheme would be too labour intensive for the RMS to support.
* Accreditation requires focus and there are some basic questions which need answering: Why are we doing it? Who is it for? How will it be administered? Who will run it? Who will pay?
* Accreditation must be persued collaboratively. We will only produce something worthwhile if we consult with other organisations/institutions who have experience and who RMS accreditation may impact. We must attempt to find a solution suitable for the membership by supporting communication and consultation with the membership throughout the process.
* It will be hard - but, if done properly, worth the effort.
To take this matter forward Tony May is organising a meeting at the end of June (date and venue to be confirmed). This will be a real opportunity to identify key points and decide a strategy to progress Accreditation with, we hope, presentations from existing schemes and break out groups to discuss the many issues attached to this endeavour.
For ease of transport, we hope to be able to hold the meeting in London and would envisage it lasting from 10am - 4pm. If you would be interested in attending please let me know and I will ensure that you are sent the details.
Kind regards
Sarah
