WORKSHOP ANNOUNCEMENT: "Activating Metadata: the effective exploitation of
spatial data"
To be held at the National Institute for Environmental eScience (NIEeS),
Cambridge 6th +AJY 7th July 2005
Have you ever obtained a data set and then asked:
'why the ... did they do that?',
'what the ... does that mean?', or,
'who the ... decided that?'
Have you ever produced a data set and then asked:
'why did the ... user think that analysis was a good idea?', or,
'what are the ungrateful ... complaining about?'
We think you+IBk-ve asked those questions because the metadata was inactive; at
best it provided some information that the data existed but it didn+IBk-t
provide the knowledge that the data producers had that would allow the users
to properly exploit it. The +IBg-Activating Metadata+IBk workshop is based around
specific case studies produced by three different communities: users,
producers and mediators (standards organisations, data warehouses etc.). We
will explore how to develop metadata to maximise effective exploitation of
spatial data by:
- including descriptions of the context of data;
- indicating the embedded data concepts;
- being more user-focussed.
We would like to activate metadata to make it more useful. This is
increasingly relevant in light of the many recent spatial data initiatives
that promote 3rd party data access.
Costs: The workshop is free. NIEeS will reimburse reasonable travel expenses
within the UK
Attendance: The workshop is open to anyone but you must register at
