Dear all,
If you haven't already looked at the May edition of NRICH
(www.nrich.maths.org), then please do! The mathematical theme is Number
and Functions, and although it is a while since we concentrated on these
fundamental ideas, there is something for everyone to get stuck into.
The interactivity in Domino Numbers
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2728&part=index&refpage=m
onthindex.php>) may change the way you look at the multiplication tables
and you are encouraged not just to spot a pattern, but explain it too.
The higher level problems build on this idea, beginning with Triangles
within Triangles
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2734&part=index&refpage=m
onthindex.php>), followed by Triangles within Squares
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2735&part=index&refpage=m
onthindex.php>) and Triangles within Pentagons
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=2736&part=index&refpage=m
onthindex.php>). Notice a theme?!
Basket Case
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=1137&part=index&refpage=m
onthindex.php>) is perhaps one for you shopaholics out there, but be warned
- it is a serious challenge!
We are resurrecting two "old favourite" games this month: Wild Jack
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=1262&part=index&refpage=m
onthmanager.php>) and Nim
(<http://nrich.maths.org/public/viewer.php?obj_id=1274&part=index&refpage=m
onthmanager.php>). Both are motivating contexts in which to apply your
mathematics.
As usual, we look forward to receiving your solutions by the 21st.
All the best from the NRICH team.
