Congratulations are due to the Big Pit Mining Museum, Blaenavon, who,
the Guardian report today, has won the prestigious Gulbenkian Award
for museum of the year, worth £100,000, it is the largest prize in the
arts in the UK.
It was praised by the chairman of the judges, Sir Richard Sykes, as,
"An exceptional emotional and intellectual experience. It tells the
individual stories of its community better than any museum I have
visited, and makes you contemplate the scale, and even the cruelty, of
our industrial past which inspired a spirit of camaraderie and pride".
