And Bayly's Shaft at Wheal Gawton, just downriver from George & Charlotte,
from 1853 to c.1875.
The mapped representation shows small buildings on either side of the 45'
water wheel, one was for a set of crusher rolls, the other for the winder.
The wheel also had a crank driving pumps in the shaft via a chain which was
conveyed between pulleys set on a set of stilts between the wheel and the
shaft. Some sort of clutch and gears between the wheel and a separate
winding drum must have been used. A section drawing is on one of the AMR
plans held in Devon Record Office.
There is some evidence for a clutch and gears beside the pit for the 35'
wheel which pumped Whim Shaft at G & C too. This was probably installed by
the 1840s.
