Overview:
This is an exciting time to join us at Croydon Museum Service.
The Heritage Lottery Fund has just grant-aided us £1 million to redevelop
our community history gallery.
We are in the process of collecting content for the new Museum of Croydon.
We want the new Museum of Croydon to represent Croydon from 1800 to the
present day and demonstrate its evolution from market town to the capital’s
largest borough.
Our aims for the exhibition include:
- Conveying a positive and balanced impression of Croydon
- Being people-focussed and showing that everyone plays a role in history
- Using oral history and object displays to look at all aspects of human
life and acting as a public forum for the discussion of difficult subjects
- Exploring Croydon’s past and present as a multicultural place
Role:
The Social History Researcher will undertake targeted areas of research and
collecting from 1800 to the present day to represent the full breadth of
Croydon and its diverse communities. The job will involve:
- researching areas of 19th century local history
- locating and photographing suitable objects to be lent to the new Museum
of Croydon from museums and other institutions and from local people.
- undertaking focussed areas of collecting to represent Croydon in the 20th
century, again locating objects and negotiating loans
- making contact with individuals
- conducting and recording oral history interviews
- annotating the tapes, processing photographs and updating and reference
information systems.
The researcher will be part of the museum service’s team of 15 people and
will report to the Collections & Interpretation Manager.
Applicants should have a genuine interest in social history and community
based museums.
Experience of working in the sector (paid or voluntary) and relevant
experience is required.
The ability to interact well with people is very important. The applicant
will need to be fluent in both written and spoken English.
