1 Position Summary
Field of Activity: Urban Sustainable Development
Main area of specialization: Housing industry with special reference to
sustainable residential development processes.
A lecturer is required to research and teach the processes that shape
the supply of sustainable housing, with reference to outcomes in
Australian and Asian cities. The research and teaching focus will
include housing sustainability, and the impact of sustainability
objectives on the method and location of housing supply. A capacity to
utilise GIS in teaching and research in these areas will be an
advantage.

4. Key Responsibilities
Academic staff are expected to make contributions to the teaching effort
of the Faculty and to carry out activities to maintain and develop
his/her scholarly, research, and/or professional activities relevant to
the profession or discipline.
4.1 Specific Duties
Teaching
* conduct tutorials
* preparation and delivery of lectures and seminars at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels
* initiation and development of subject material
* consultation with students
* marking and assessment
* administrative tasks associated with the subjects taught
* subject coordination
* supervision of honours students and postgraduate research
students as required
Research
* production of publications arising from scholarship and research
* active participation in research seminars and conferences
* active participation in projects aimed at attracting external
research funding
Service to Department
* meetings and committee work
5. Environmental, Health and Safety Responsibilities
All staff are responsible for the following safe work procedures and

Supervisors are responsible for:
* developing new work procedures, as required, in conjunction with
relevant persons
* providing all staff with relevant EHS information in an
appropriate manner
* providing personal protective equipment and clothing if hazards
cannot be fully eliminated
* providing adequate supervision through technical guidance and
support
* identifying and controlling hazardous conditions
* providing appropriate facilities for safe storage, handling and
transport of hazardous substances
* ensuring that all accidents and incidents are reported
In addition, Academic Staff are responsible for ensuring that an
equivalent stardard of environment, health and safety is afforded to
their students as is afforded to University staff generally. Academic
staff are deemed to have principal supervisory duty for undergraduate
and postgraduate student activities.
6 Other Information
6.1 Organisation Unit: Urban Planning Program
Studies in Urban Planning are available in both undergraduate and
postgraduate modes. The undergraduate program is four years full-time
duration. The course can be combined with other programs in the
Faculty. A combined program in Urban Planning and Property &
Construction has been established recently. Postgraduate teaching spans
Diploma and Masters by coursework programs. The teaching focus is on
planning practice and transport, social planning, urban design and
economic development.
Research carried out by Urban Planning staff cover these fields, and
staff won several ARC research grants, and published widely in national
and international journals and books. Urban Planning staff supervise
over a quarter of the Faculty's Research Masters and PhD students, who
are currently drawn from Asia, Africa and Australia.
6.2 Budget Division
The University of Melbourne introduced Australia's first studies in
architecture in the 1860s. In 1927 it established the first full-time
architecture course. Since then, courses in other disciplines of the
built and natural environments have followed. Today the Faculty of
Architecture, Building and Planning trains architects, construction
managers, property developers, quantity surveyors, facility planners and
managers, landscape architects, urban designers, and urban planners.
There are more than 1200 students and around eighty continuing academic
and general staff.
