Why study this course?
Cultural services are a major priority in government policy, both at local
and national level, and a significant contributor to social inclusion and
economic regeneration. Professionalisation in this area demands
postgraduate qualifications that prepare people for strategic leadership
roles.
This course has been designed to equip you with the necessary knowledge and
competencies required to obtain employment and/or progress your knowledge,
understanding and career in the increasingly significant fields of tourism
and cultural policy.
Who is the course for and where will graduates go?
· Recent graduates in related first degrees such as leisure, tourism,
geography, planning, urban sociology and cultural studies
· Those employed in the range of differentiated sectors within
tourism and cultural services such as cultural policy, leisure planning,
tourism management, visitor attraction management and heritage management
· Those employed in occupations such as sports management,
hospitality management, urban planning, and community development and who
are seeking to change career
This course is available for full-time or part-time study. It will appeal
to both recent graduates with related first degrees and those employed in
tourism, heritage, cultural services, leisure, urban and countryside policy
and planning, regeneration and environmental management, who wish to
further their careers.
This course takes an interdisciplinary perspective on tourism, urban life
and the productive consumption of culture. It engages with the debates
surrounding current public policies linking tourism and cultural
development with urban renewal, economic regeneration, environmental
sustainability, heritage and social inclusion. Modules also develop the
skills, knowledge and experiences required by the reflexive practitioner
within tourism and cultural services with a focus on career management and
continuing professional development. Training in methods of enquiry is
compulsory and candidates for the MA will complete a dissertation.
