CALL FOR PAPERS
Panel: 'Performing Bodies'
T A P R A is a new British and Irish research association founded in order
to foster and sustain research in all theatre, performance and related
areas in British and Irish Universities and allied institutions. As part
of its inaugural conference, to take place Thursday 8th-Saturday 10th
September at the University of Manchester, short papers (20 minutes) are
being solicited for the panel 'Performing Bodies'. The invitation extends
to all scholars interested in the role of the body in any performance
mode, including theatre, dance and live art.
The panel conveners acknowledge that although the 'body' has been key to
critical discourses since the 1980s, there is still research to be
carried out as regards performance, especially in relation to
interrogating cultural form.
Papers on any topic will be welcomed. Some suggested strands for
consideration include:
- historically based readings of the body (including the gendered, racial,
sexualised and politically radical body).
- group or ensemble collections of the body in performance.
- the individual body as testament.
- the virtual body.
- the disciplined (rehearsed) body.
Expressions of interest should be sent in the first instance to the panel
conveners Colin Counsell and Joshua Sofaer at: [log in to unmask],
and should include Name, Contact Address, Proposed Title, Summary (no more
than 350 words) and brief Biog by Friday 10th June 2005.
