PhD Studentship: Designing future information and entertainment services
Student stipend and home student fees
The Ergonomics & Safety Research Institute (ESRI) at Loughborough
University invites applications for a doctoral research studentship funded
by IMCRC (to commence in July 2005) The studentship covers a maintenance
payment (currently £10,500 pa 2004/05) plus University fees at UK/EU rate.
The research will be in the following area. Applicants will need to be
highly motivated and have at least an upper second honours degree or
equivalent professional qualification in an appropriate discipline The
precise research questions to be investigated would be developed in
consultation with the successful candidate.
Topic: Using customisation and context of use to design better personal
information and communication technologies
There is a continuing growth in the provision of information and
communication technologies (ICT) both within the home (e.g. interactive
TV), and via mobile devices (e.g. mobile phone or PDA). However, to be
effective and easy to use, these services need to take into account the
requirements of the specific user and the context of their use. Failing to
do this (i.e. providing 'one-size-fits-all' solutions) will result in
services that are perceived as irrelevant to the user, and which fail in
the marketplace. In short, personal information and communication
technologies must add value to the end user, at the point of use, if they
are to be used regularly by individuals.
This studentship would:
i) investigate what needs to be known about the person and/or context
in order to customise ICT products and services to individual users
ii) Identify the role that dynamic changes in context of use plays in
altering the requirements for such services
iii) knowing this, identify human-device interaction concepts that
would support the end-user
There will be opportunity to focus on specific applications or services as
appropriate (e.g. 'smart homes' or mobile devices). However, the findings
should be applicable to a range of human-device interaction scenarios
(e.g. mobile phones, digital TV, driver information systems, personal and
home appliances) and it would be expected that generic human factors
principles would be developed as a result of the research.
