(1) We were originally intending to allow the strips to be different
widths, but it turns out Tcl/Tk is a bloody pain over this, it's hard to
get it to listed to you when you ask for specified widths. So for now all
you get is the same width for each strip (of course you can make the
overall window as wide as you want).

I presume this is because you are using the pack layout manager??
Have you thought about using the grid layout manager....
(2) I'm not quite sure what you mean by this. If you have loads of strips
they are going to be small and I'm not sure we can do much about that
(given the above, certainly). Is it that you want a way to turn strips on
and off easily (so you only, effectively, show a subset)? We ought to be
able to set up macros to do that kind of thing (the main issue being how
to design the interface to make it usable).
I guess th thing is here that the spectrum widgets need to be put in a
scrollpane and just n strips should be visible at any one time time....
