Dear List,
Does anyone know exactly how manganese ore was processed in the early 19th century?
In a description of 1826, the German engineers Carl Von Oeynhausen & Heinrich Von Dechen describe a manganese mill at Morwellham in West Devon as 'grinding manganese slag'. Does this mean that there was a roasting phase in manganese processing? Or did they get it wrong?! Definitive knowledge of the process would help me to understand the surviving building at Morwellham.
