Dear John,
An excellent article was published on this subject in one of the series of journals: Industrial Gwynnedd, produced jointly by a number of conservation bodies in North Wales. I can't remember which volume, as it has eluded me in my filing system, but I daresay Peter Claughton or someone else will be able to supply the exact reference.
We have a similar problem at Morwellham in West Devon, where an incline of 1817 had a kink about half-way down, exacerbated by being located in a short tunnel. We hope to carry out clearance work on this incline in the near future, so we hope to find out what communication system they were using. A wire or cord on pulleys is possible, but not certain.
