At Burtree Pasture Mine in Weardale in County Durham, which was one of the
major mines operated by WB Lead in the nineteenth century, the winding
waterwheel was not on the surface, but underground. It was fitted with
two sets of boxes or buckets, so the motion of the wheel could be
reversed.
