Can anyone on this list offer advice?
I'm transcribing an essay written in 1815. The section is about the quality of water needed for bleaching purposes in the early textile industry in Scotland. The writer says:
"In a trap country in particular iron generally abounds and we find accordingly that the Bleacher in the neighbourhood of Glasgow find the iron which comes from the basalt rocks very troublesome to manage..."
It is the word 'trap' that I find impossible to explain. Can anyone suggest a meaning? Has 'trap' a geological or mineralogical meaning?
All suggestions very welcome. Could it be that I am mis reading the MS? I don't think so because the word is so clearly written. Thanks in anticipation.
Fred.
