Folks,
Thanks for attending on Friday - I hope you found the discussions
useful. Many thanks again to Chris from Abertay for his chat on
FOI/Records Management.
I'm looking at early September for our next get together. Hopefully this
will allow us to bring topics/thoughts back from IWMW in Manchester and
give us time to investigate a suggestion which came out of Friday's
meeting.
The suggestion was to have a live exercise involving students visiting
our sites to carry out a series of tasks in order that we can begin to
get an appreciation of how one of our customer groups finds their way
around our sites. It is likely :
- that each institution would provide 1 or 2 students
- we would book a lab with multiple computers, internet connections and
a data projector or two
- a fixed 'test script' would have to be agreed and we'd ask the
students to carry out the listed actions and observe as they did so e.g.
"Find out about accomodation fees for first year students living 40
miles or more from campus.", "Where is the Mathematics building?",
etc...
Jim Byrne (formerly of Caledonian Uni) has also been in touch and
offered to come and chat with us. He's gone into business for himself
and, among other things will be continuing his interest in
accessibility, etc. We could revisit accessibility with Jim covering
specific issues or guiding a general conversation. He has also mentioned
that he performs 'live audits' of sites for accessibility. I thought it
might be interesting if he did such an audit for us - perhaps on
Strathclyde's (hopefully) soon-to-be-launched CMS driven, updated
design.
Please let me know your thoughts on both the proposed timeframe and the
suggested activities. As ever, if you'd like to suggest anything else
for us to cover, please do.
Regards,
Duncan
