Dear Jeffery
Doubtless others will mention this, but Kipling's dates are 1865-1936
I'd suggest something along the lines of
Rudyard Kipling
Author and Nobel Laureate
1865-1936
Found peace and inspiration here
1900-1908
Then you could quote the final refrain from his 1903 poem South Africa
On your feet, and let them know
This is why we love her!
For she is South Africa,
She is Our South Africa,
In Our Own South Africa,
Africa all over!
Not the best Kipling, I grant you, but it would probably go down well -
unlike the quatrain about Cape Town in Song of the Cities - 'I dream my
dream, by rock and heath and pine,/Of Empire to the northward.'
best wishes
Andrew Lycett
