You'll find a chart of record times for different formats (MP3 and PCM/WAV)
using different card sizes. These times ar for the Marantz PMD670 but the
numbers will be almost identical regardless of the recorder.

For transcription I've found that 32kbps mono MP3 or 64kbps stereo MP3 works
fine. That's a fairly high compression rate but the sample rate is 22.05 KHz
which is more than good enough for voice recording for transcription.
The newer Sony MD recorders called Hi-MD let you upload recordings to PC via
USB but you have to use Sony's SonicStage software and a converter to remove
the digital rights wrapper. My two cents: complicated, slow and probably
unreliable.
