That is because the documentary evidence offers many of the answers to the questions, whereas archaeological evidence invariably asks further questions :o)
Incidentally, I loved David's short but so apt reply in the latest HMS News entitled 'Smelting Experiments at Butser: A Reply'. As ever he states the obvious "the results, (of the smelting of copper experiments), were very satisfactory, but really proved nothing at all." The reply is just so David.
