I didn't mean to have a go at those using HHGPS. Obviously its fine for
preparing plans at 1:2500 or more, and if it works for you then use it.
I think we run the risk of this thread getting a little obscure if we
pursue the accuracy issue too far.
What we archaeological surveyors seem to have failed to do is convince
the mining interest community of the benefits of metrically accurate
earthwork survey as a means of providing valuable data. This concerns
and saddens me greatly because I know for certain that if you were to
apply these techniques to any mine site you were investigating, your
interpretations would be greatly enhanced.
If anyone's going to the AIA conference at Notts in September I'm hoping
to do a presentation on our (EH AI&S) work at extractive sites in
Dartmoor National Park. I'd be really pleased to talk to anyone who is
there regarding the merits of analytical survey - especially
non-believers.
