medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Perhaps this has been announced already at the Kalamzoo Congress web site, but in case it has not, I will send it to the list now:
Last night I heard a performance at Rockefeller Chapel at the University of Chicago by the Schola Antiqua of Chicago, directed by Calvin Bower of Notre Dame University's Medieval Institute. They assembled a set of chants and polyphonic works from the Office and the Masses in honor of Thomas Becket from various manuscripts of the 12thc onward, mostly from England but including one striking piece from late-12thc St. Gall, where a chapel was built in honor of Thomas Becket already at that early date. The one-hour concert was really quite remarkable--not a massive amount of material but nicely chosen and well-performed.
I know some on the list are interested in Becket's cult specifically and others in saints' cults in general. The performance is being repeated on May 8th, the Sunday that the Kalamazoo Congress ends, at 7 pm at St. Gertrude's Church, which is on the north side near Loyola University's campus (at the intersection of Granville and Glenwood) , readily accessible from the northern termnius of Lake Shore Drive and also readily accessible by public transportation (Red Line Elevated, Granville stop or Loyola stop [the latter is safer late at night] or the 147 Michigan Ave. bus that can be picked up in the Loop). Many will already have made travel arrangements that may make it impossible to take this in, but for those who built some flexibility into their plans, I thought I'd give it a personal "two thumbs up" endorsement.
The Schola Antiqua phone number is 312-208-1159 and the email address they listed is [log in to unmask] I have no connection with the Schola Antiqua Foundation or with its director or Notre Dame and no one paid me to make this endorsement!
