INTRODUCTION: CADAIR IDRIS SPONSORED WALK: CAREER DEVELOPMENT GROUP WALES

- Career Development Group Wales sponsored walk 2005: Cadair Idris:
Saturday
2nd July.
- The walk is in the south of Snowdonia and includes specatacular mountain
scenery. The walk begins with a steep climb through trees, following a
good,
clear path of big steps. Shortly after that we will stop for a break by the
hidden cwm. We will then follow a grassy, rocky ascent.
- We will be meeting at the Minffordd car park at the junction of the A487
and the B4405 at 10.00am.
- The walk should take 5-6 hours so we will finish at about 3-4pm.
- If you intend to join us on the walk, you will need to complete and sign
the form at the bottom of this e-mail. This form will be used to keep a
record of who is participating in the sponsored walk and possibly the
co-ordination of transport to the walk. We are currently considering a
mini-bus from Aberystwyth.

WHAT IS THE SPONSORED WALK IN AID OF?

- The Career Development Group is involved in several international library
and librarian activities. The Group is currently supporting a Voluntary
Services Overseas worker in Uganda. The next biennial study tour will be in
2005 and will be to Hungary and Slovakia.
- The Cadair Idris sponsored walk aims to support the Groups' international
fundraising. More information about the Group's current project is
available: here: http://www.careerdevelopmentgroup.org.uk/currproj.htm.
- The previous project raised £3,000 to support a mobile library in the
Maldives.
- In 2004, Career Development Group Wales raised £575.30.

SUMMARY:

- Distance: 5.5 miles - 7miles; 8.8km - 11km (depending on which book you
look at and the route we take down from the mountain)
- Main Summits: Mynydd Pencoed (2595ft; 791m); Pen y Gadair (2928ft; 893m);
Mynydd Moel (2832ft; 863m).

FURTHER POSSIBILITIES:

- If there is sufficient interest we may co-ordinate a family option at
Talyllyn Railway, a historic narrow-gauge steam railway, set in the
beautiful Mid-Wales countryside: http://www.talyllyn.co.uk/.
- This could be a picnic possibility for those who want to take part in the
day but who do not want to walk up a mountain, perhaps because they have
children.
- - We need 15 people for a reduced rate group booking. The train group can
enjoy the train journey, including the Dolgoch Falls.
- Everybody can meet later in the day at the Abergynolwyn station. This
station is close to Cadair Idris and it has a car park.
- The Abergynolwyn station has toilet facilities for passengers in
wheelchairs. Carriages are available for wheelchairs. We can arrange for
assistance, if you let us know in advance.
- The Talyllyn Railway has a Disability Access Statement:
http://www.talyllyn.co.uk/stations/access-statement.html.
- We may organise a Chartership event in Aberystwyth on the Friday before
the walk.

PARTICIPANT NUMBERS:

Due to the nature of the walk, it is felt that a limit of no more than
thirty should take part in the main walk and up to twenty five for
train/family option.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION:

- Cadair Idris is a challenging walk for the reasonably fit. It is harder
than the Pen y Fan sponsored walk organised by Career Development Group
Wales in the Brecon
Beacons in 2004. If the weather is bad (heavy rain overnight or misty on
the
day, for instance) we will come down from the mountain following the same
route used to
come up. In misty weather it is possible to lose the way over a possibly
boggy section of Mynnedd Moel. There is also a small stream to cross which
is fine in dry
weather but much trickier in rain.
- When you are walking in the mountains, it is essential that you wear
boots
or strong shoes with a good tread pattern, and that you take with you
adequate protective
clothing, a spare sweater, map, compass, whistle, torch, spare food and a
first aid kit.
- This web site provides a description of the route we will be taking and
further information: http://digbig.com/4detf
- The met office provides weather forecasts for the Snowdonia national
park:

IF YOU WANT TO JOIN THE SPONSORED WALK YOU WILL NEED TO CONTACT US WITH THE
FOLLOWING INFORMATION:
- Career Development Group Wales recognises that a sponsored walk up a
mountain has certain health and safety implications. As a precaution we are
asking for some basic personal information from you. The information will
be
collected by the Sponsored Walk Co-ordinator, Neil Smyth, and it will be
used by the Career Development Group Wales committee solely for the purpose
of organising this walk.
