Codex Sinaiticus Project
(Fixed term 3months)
Salary £23-27k pro rata
A vacancy exists for a temporary archival researcher to work for three
months on the 19th- and 20th-century history of the Codex Sinaiticus, the
world's oldest manuscript of the Bible. As part of the Codex Sinaiticus
Digitisation Project − a major international scholarly project − you will
identify, collaborate on gaining access to, analysing and preparing for
publication archival material, partly in Russia, Germany and Egypt,
relating to the history of the Codex. You will use this material to
compile a dossier containing copies of relevant archival material and a
report on the research. You will coordinate similar research undertaken by
others, in particular on the acquisition of the Codex by the British
Museum, you will collaborate with the representatives of the project's
partners and members of the project board, and report regularly to the
chairs of the project board and curatorial working party.
You must have a good honours degree in a relevant subject and fluency in
Russian, German, and preferably also in French. You must have a track
record of successful archival research, with experience of diplomatic
archives. You should have good written and oral communication skills, the
ability to maintain the confidentiality of the project and advanced
diplomatic skills. You must be self-motivating, willing to travel and able
to deliver results to tight deadlines.
