7th Saintsbury Conference
(Re)Writing Literary History
The 7th Saintsbury conference, sponsored by the Saintsbury Winery, Napa,
California, will take place on Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd October 2005.
Several important literary-historical projects currently in mid-publication, or
nearing fruition have put literary history at the centre of scholarly debate
once more. No doubt some of this activity is millennially-inspired: it may also
respond to or anticipate shifts in literary studies, away from
theory/philosophy/linguistics and towards cultural materialism, New
Historicisms, other historically-based approaches. At the same time, literary
history faces several new challenges, particularly in its national and
language-centred forms. The conference addresses new and recent directions in
literary history and reviews the legacy of one of the first of
twentieth-century literary historians, George Saintsbury, on the 90th
anniversary of his retiral from the Chair of English Literature at Edinburgh
University.
Speakers will include:
Jonathan Bate, University of Warwick:
Literary History: From the Elizabethans to the Twenty-First Century
(The 2005 Saintsbury Lecture)
Peter Davies, University of Edinburgh
Peter France, University of Edinburgh
Brian McHale, Ohio State University
Chris Baldick, Goldsmiths College, University of London
Andrew Barker, University of Edinburgh
Jennifer Birkett, University of Birmingham

Rick Rylance, University of Exeter
