Hi Ebe,
I can assure you that your question is neither self evident or silly,
quite the opposite in fact! I also think that Nik provided some very
useful working definitions.
In terms of defining what a repository is, or isn't, it can be useful
to try to distinguish between basic repository functionality and the
user services and business logic that may be layered on top of this
basic functionality. Towards the end of last year during a JISC /
DEST / CETIS meeting to discuss repository services in relation to the
ELF (http://www.elframework.org/) Kerry Blinco, Scott Wilson, Andy
Powell and Pete Johnston spent some time debating the key functional
characteristics of repositories: put, store and get. In order to get
some idea of the complexity of the kind of user services and business
processes that can be layered on top of these key functions it's useful
to look at Kerry and Neil McLean's (in)famous Wheel of Fortune diagram.
You can find the most recent version here:
http://cordra.lsal.cmu.edu/cordra/calendar/events/workshop20050204/
presentations/elf-20050204.ppt
(Slides 33 & 34 - you'll need a recent version of PowerPoint to view
the animation.)
I think this neatly captures the complex nature of the repository space
and also illustrates how different types of repositories relate to each
other.
You'll notice that I haven't mentioned content management
systems.....that's because I don't know anything about them!
Bye
Lorna
