Hi Ebe
Here's a brief, but fairly loose, attempt:
DR: A means of collecting together objects in electronic format (ie
digital), normally with a uniform means of access, possibly facilitated
by metadata to aid their discovery and to distinguish them. Image
banks, pre-print collections, question banks etc would all fall under
this definition, as would a learning object repository. An example
would be JORUM.
CMS: A means of managing content, typically for a website or portal,
which, through the use of templates and inline editing tools, normally
allows the non-technical an easy means of publishing content, and an
administrator to mangage that content (flag it for publication, review
or deletion, or roll back to earlier versions). May also include the
means to catalogue metadata for its content. A famous open source
example would be Plone.
EMS: A bigger version of the above (think of the relationship between an
MLE and a VLE), including personnel, sales & product data etc. More
tailored to providing an intranet/extranet for an organisation, in
addition to public facing websites etc. A famous commercial example
would be Vignette.
IR: A species of DR, tied to the requirements of a particular
organisation. Might be used, for example, by a University to make
available the research output of its staff.
