===================================
With the extensive media coverage of the Tsunami Disaster in Asia,
donations to charity reached record levels this year. This included a
large number of donations made online.
In the first week of January, the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC)
[1] raised £30 million from online donations. In the nine days following
the disaster, Christian Aid [2] took nearly four times as much in online
donations as it did in credit card donations over the phone. [3]
Clearly the Web (and a usable one at that) is important to the success
of such causes.
In the year when we could Make Poverty History [4], charities are using
the Web to raise money, provide information, campaign, and recruit. As
more charities are attracted to this relatively cheap method of
interacting with their supporters, it's vitally important that their
investment gets its returns.

So, what do you think? What are your experiences of using the Web to
donate to charity or to get information about campaigns? Have you worked
on design projects for websites, software, or even full systems for a
not-for-profit organisation? What differences are there between
usability work for charities and for commercial organisations?

Whether you write a long article or case study (~1000 words), a short
opinion or observation (~500 words), or top tips on how to design for
not-for-profit organisations (~100-300 words), just make sure it's clear
and relevant to the HCI community.
Send at least a rough draft to me by the submissions deadline (15th
April), or email me sooner ([log in to unmask]) if you want to
bounce some ideas.
Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
Thanks,
Laura
