Workshop Proposal:
Tangible Interfaces for Playful Learning ? past, present, and future
To be presented at IDC2005, Boulder Colorado, USA
June 8th 2005
http://www.cs.colorado.edu/conferences/idc2005/
Half-day session (3 hours)
Organizers: Oren Zuckerman, MIT Media Lab; Glenda Revelle, Sesame Workshop;
Yvonne Rogers, Indiana university; Mitch Resnick, MIT Media Lab.
This Workshop is designed to bring together designers, educators, industry
professionals, and researchers interested in playful learning and the design
of tangible interfaces. We will review relevant Tangible User Interfaces
(TUI) projects (past and present), discuss the concept of playful learning,
review TUI classifications, and suggest questions for future research.
We will discuss questions such as: Do tangibles really add anything to learning?
What is wrong with WIMP interfaces? What are the different types of TUIs
and what is their relevance to learning? What can we learn from the physical
objects currently used in educational settings? Can TUIs help seamlessly
blend learning with play?
Workshop organizers will give short presentations, to be followed by an open
discussion. Participants are encouraged to present their research projects,
thoughts, ideas and questions.
We welcome those who are working in the field in universities, research centers,
or commercial environments, as well as those who are interested to learn
more about this emerging field. If you would like to attend this workshop,
please send an e-mail to [log in to unmask], giving a brief description
of your background and interests. If you would like to present your work
at the workshop, please submit a short paper describing your work.
We have setup an email list to enable open discussion before and after the
workshop. Go to http://groups-beta.google.com/group/Tangibles-For-Children
to join. Currently there are about 70 members, mostly CHI 2005 attendants.
