* Guidance
* Ideas for events

Outlined below are plans for AAC in 2005, 2006 and 2007. As yet, nothing is
confirmed.
Publicity:
There is an ongoing publicity campaign and archive services are requested to
send stories of interest to Lucy Fulton (Archive Awareness Campaign Officer,
The National Archives, Tel: 020 8392 5237, Fax: 020 8392 5295,
[log in to unmask]). Stories of interest to the media tend
to focus on things such as personal interest, superlatives (fist, best,
worst, biggest etc.), anniversaries or significant dates (e.g. Easter) and,
for the local press, have local interest.
2005:
The theme is likely to be something like 'Children in Archives (children
visiting archives and representations of children in archives).
It is proposed that AAC will centre on a short story competition for
children. It will be aimed at Key Stage 2 (7-11) and will focus on
Victorian Childhood or Childhood (to be confirmed). The national AAC Team
is currently looking to secure partners and sponsors for the competition.
The proposed timetable is:
Mid May - competition announced to schools
Summer - consultant prepares a resource pack of archival material and lesson
plans (in digital form) to be distributed to schools. Archive services will
be asked to suggest material to be included in this pack.
September - resource pack distributed to schools
November-December - competition held
Archive services will be asked to hold events based around the short story
competition and use the resource pack with children and teachers. They can
also look at holding events based around the finished stories.
2006:
It is proposed that AAC 2006 will be based around a second series of Who Do
You Think You Are? (WDYTYA?). The central AAC team will shortly be meeting
with the BBC to discuss plans for series 2 of WDYTYA?. It is likely to be
broadcast in Spring 2006. Details are undecided but it will probably still
be based around celebrities but might also include a Memory Bank (as in the
People's War website).
Events could develop the themes of AAC2005 e.g. involving children in family
history.
2007:
It is proposed that the theme for 2007 is Liberty and Freedom, to mark the
bicentennary of the abolition of the slave trade. Events could focus on
physical, intellectual, religious, linguistic or cultural freedom.
Future Themes:
Possible future themes for AAC were discussed. Themes suggested included:
* Business/industry archives e.g. heavy industries such as coal
mining, slate quarrying and steel/ironworks and their contribution to and
relationship with the community.
* Transport/Travel
HLF Funding:
The HLF 'Your Heritage' scheme offers grants of between £5,000 and £50,000.
There is no fixed amount of match funding. Projects must:
EITHER conserve and enhance our diverse heritage;
OR encourage communities to identify, look after and celebrate their
heritage
AND increase opportunities for learning about heritage;
AND open up heritage resources and sites to the widest possible audiences
There is a 3 month assessment period for applications.
