Some ethical perspectives on rural community photography: a review of some
of the ethical problems, professional challenges and responsibilities
involved in working with marginal or disadvantaged rural communities.

The seminar will address some of the ethical questions arising from recent
photography work documenting rural change and issues affecting rural and
farming communities, including tackling more controversial issues relating
to; rural stress, hunting, bio-technology, BSE, FMD, and GMOs. It will then
discuss a range of appropriate consultation and research methodologies
employed by photographers and artists working on long term rural community
documentation or research projects, including new approaches to future work
with rural and fishing port communities, projects with travellers and
recordingthe experiences of asylum seekers and immigrant farm labourers in
rural areas.
Case study presentations include:
Kate Bellis, on a major programme of work with hill farming communities in
Derbyshire and Northumberland; photographer Tony Fisher's recent project
documenting the links between North African immigrant farm labourers in
Andalucia, and TESCO supermarket tomatoes in England;
Nick May's five year video and photography documentary project developed in
collaboration with livestock farmers in Cumbria, culled out by FMD in 2001;
Sue Gaukroger from REAP on creative approaches to work with rural
communities in Derbyshire; Rizwan Mirza (tbc) on work with travellers
and marginal rural communities, and documenting UK farming families
currently emigrating to Canada.
The seminar will conclude with discussion of proposals for future
exhibitions and research symposia; a Hill Farming Community Cultures
conference and exhibition (October 2005), Grains of Truth - the New Rural
Photography, international symposium and exhibition (September 2006), and
proposals for a UK fishing port communities documentary photography project
(2006-8).
