Hi Cary

Sorry couldn't make conference - we were all a bit too busy getting the term up and running. Still waiting for an invoice to pay subscription.

Best wishes

Anne

Subject: Update on conference 14th and 15th April 2005

Dear colleagues,

I am writing to let those of you who couldn't come to Manchester know that we had a very good conference and AGM last week. MMU were perfect hosts.

Andy Golding and Silke Lange, from Design, Digital Media and Photography at the University of Westminster (where Andy is Chair), gave the keynote presentation, and Prof. Pavel Buchler, MIRIAD, Manchester Metropolitan University, spoke to the theme of 'Boring teacher meets selfish researcher'. There was a very stimulating discussion and you can read their papers on the website www.aphe.ac.uk <http://www.aphe.ac.uk/> . Members attended an evening reception of the MMU research staff exhibition, 'Sex, Death and Flat Pack Furniture: An exploration of narrative through screen and book', and then went on to a very nice Chinese meal (organised by Paul Proctor - who is still chasing you for your membership fees!). On the following day we held the AGM (notes from which below, thanks to our secretary, John Gulliver).

APHE AGM 15 April 2005 - Action Bullet Points

* Look into the possibility of APHE taking credit card subscriptions.
* Hire staff to work on increasing m/ship using UCAS course data and other sources and improve communications between members, student to telephone 'round updating data base. John to help out with this.
* Scrap joining fee and increase annual subscription to £100 - for institution, no limit on number of members eligible from each institution.
* Sponsor(s) to be sought to cover such as conference lunches etc. Neil Onslow to make enquiries.
* Sponsor(s) to be sought to provide prize(s) for photography (different categories). Judging panel invited/appointed by APHE.
* Next conference agenda needs to remain focused. Topic for next conference should be decided by September at the latest.
* Employ designer to provide more APHE and conference promotional materials.
* The executive to agree to meet at particular conferences in order to promote best practice in HE and share ideas, network, hand out promotional materials etc. Suggestions on forthcoming conferences should be disseminated through Jiscmail. For example AOP conference in June "Focus on Industry".
* John Kippin: note forthcoming conference programme @ Sunderland & European partners. APHE to promote & support these 2 conferences and arrange reciprocal links through our websites for mutual promotion and development.
* The AOP 'Teachers' Day' was discussed: Cary to promote APHE involvement in this.
* Pavel's conference paper and P/Point slides from Andy's and Silke's presentation from 14 April 2005 to be published on APHE website.
* Delegates to be urged to contribute feedback from the conference via Jiscmail, Paul to up-load onto website.
* Cary to transcribe conference discussion, voice recording to be supplied by Neil Onslow.
* Mark Hall to work with Paul to develop links section on APHE website.
* Members' suggestions for web links to be passed on to Paul.
* Association should endeavour to keep effective presence with RAE, CHEAD, ILT etc.
* Suggestions for APHE members' group show at Arts Institute, Bournemouth; book, DVD or work etc. Conrad to progress. Show might tour, members to take proposal to their respective institution's galleries.
* 'Send us your Firsts' APHE members to send examples of their student's best works for website /publication through book, DVD etc.
* Thanks to Jaqueline Butler for her hard work making the APHE welcome at MMU. Write to the Dean, Maureen Wayman, at MMU to formally thank her for co-operation and help.
* Nominations from m/ship would be requested for deputy chair.
* APHE should support continuation of Foundation Art and Design courses.
* Cary to approach CHEAD to see whether the APHE could make input to school Photography curriculum.

***

As you can see, I have to invite nominations for deputy chair. The APHE has had to say goodbye to Catherine Fehily, who has been a splendid, enthusiastic and hardworking deputy chair for the past few years. Catherine has a mountain of work as Programme Area Manager - Arts, Culture and Design in the Faculty of Arts Media and Design at Staffordshire University, and has to give us up. I am sure that everyone will join me in thanking her and wishing her well. Although there are not enough hours in the day to be on the APHE executive, I hope she will manage to join us on many occasions in the future.

So, please send me nominations for deputy chair of the association. I would be grateful if you would liaise with colleagues and ensure that anyone you nominate is happy to be nominated. I suggest that nominations close two weeks from today, on 5th May.

The second job I must do promptly, is remind you that the AOP Lecturers Day is next Thursday 28th April, and that is a good opportunity for APHE members to bring forward ideas and new thinking about education to share with the AOP. I look forward to seeing some of you there.

Finally, let me congratulate Professor Paul Seawright who has been selected to be a member of the RAE Sub Panel 63 (Art & Design). The panel, for your information, is chaired by Paul Gough and is as follows:

Maxine Bristow

Andrew Patrizio

Anita Taylor

Anne Boddington

Carole Gray

David Durling

Jim Roddis

Paul Seawright

Rachel Cooper

Stephen Scrivener

Se Walker

Clive Richards

Sandra Kemp.

I am being thrown out of the building now, it is so late! Please keep checking the website - you can help us to fill it up!

Kind regards,

Cary Welling
