Graham,
I've had a few brief discussions on this. There seem to be a number of
factors involved so I tend to have to deal with this on a case-by-case
basis :
- Who's the 'lead' institution / party?
- Where is the funding coming from? Technically, depending on this,
some folk haven't 'paid' for either my time or the University's web
space.
- We're introducing Brand Rules soon at Strathclyde which may have some
bearing on this...
- What are their aims for the site? Attracting funding; showcasing
interesting work? Attracting further reseach partners / expertise?
Recruiting research students.
- It's not just research - we have collaborative courses /
departments... Whose brand should they adopt?
I fear there isn't a one-size-fits-all solution to this :-/ I would hope
you could do a 'research toned' template that clearly evoked links with
your existing main templates which research users would find
acceptable... sometimes very minor refinements are all that are
required. I've found folks subjective views of websites / templates can
be coloured by things that present no problems to change in terms of
your more 'global' brief.
Cheers,
Duncan

Subject: Research Websites
Hi
Recently I've had some resistance to people wanting to use the standard
web template as they are part of a research project which is either
inter-departmental or inter-institutional. They feel that the template
emphasises the University too much and needs to give equal weighting to
their research partners.
What I was looking at doing was providing them with a template which
would be really simple (probably just a banner with our logo) and then
they would be able to design "underneath" this. It feels like I'm giving
in but am not sure how else to resolve this.
Have you come across this issue before and what did you do to try to
resolve it?
Thanks
Graham
