Title:
The Impacts of Demographic, Family, and Political Changes on Gender
Policies in Japan and South Korea
Abstract:
In this paper I look at the impacts of demography, family, and political
changes on gender policies in Japan and South Korea. I argue that the
1990s had been an exceptional decade for social policy expansion in these
countries, particularly in relation to family and gender policies. I look
at how the concerns over population ageing and fertility decline,
ideational shifts in relation to family and marriage, and domestic
political dynamics have contributed to the apparent expansion of gender
policies in these two countries. I also assess what these changes mean for
women.
