Hi
I'm not sure that the 'e-learning' is disappearing - there is, imho,
clear evidence to show that technology-enhanced learning is generally
maturing, in all its forms, in both educational and the commercial
sectors. Certainly e-learning has different connotations for these
sectors, as has been pointed out already. But even in the corporate
training market there has been a retreat from the fully-online learning
environment - hence 'blended learning' became flavour of the month for
a week or two!
The big national agencies (JISC, Becta etc.) are still wedded to the
term E-learning but have at least made clearer distinctions between IT,
ICT, ILT and e-learning which has been particularly helpful when
considering issues like inspection...
It's also worth noting that NLN are keen to promote 'Learning
platforms' as a generic term, which I don't mind as it covers a whole
range of delivery/management tools that few people really seem to
understand - you try explaining the difference between VLEs, LMS,
intranets, CMS, websites, portals, MLEs, conferencing systems, file
sharing etc etc. to a management team!! The government has at long
last started putting money into promoting and supporting all things "E"
in the Adult and Community Learning Sector and E-learning and Learning
Platforms are alive and well.....it would be interesting however, to
look at the understanding of e-learning in the different sectors
At the end of the day, if we understand our students' needs and we
adopt appropriate means to meet those needs, we have done the job -
what we choose to employ in the process becomes irrelevant after a
while......
