This is a sequel to my question about Spenser and hymns. Did Spenser
read literature in Spanish? The only thing that comes to mind (well, to
my mind) is the Busirane figure of Artidon, from Diego Ortúñez de
Calahorra's Mirrour of the Princely Deedes and Knighthood. But this was
available in translation (Margaret Tyler, 1578; rpt. 1580, 1599).*
Assuming that Spenser was aware of Calahorra, even in translation, was
this an isolated instance?
* If anyone's interested, see Dorothy Atkinson, "Busirane's Castle and
Artidon's Cave," MLQ 1 (1940): 185-92. This one's easy to miss:
Calahorra and Artidon aren't mentioned in the Variorum, the Spenser
Encyclopedia, or Hamilton. Anyone who's writing on Busirane should
probably have a look.
