With apologies for cross-posting
A is for Archives, R is for Records:
a Two Day Course for Records and Archives Assistants
Date: Tuesday 17 May & Tuesday 21 June 2005
Venue: The Meeting Place, 32 Stephenson Way, London NW1 2HX
Cost: £240 per participant (plus VAT)
This two day course is aimed specifically at records and archives
assistants working in archives and record offices of all types. It
will cover the main issues that para-professionals working in the
field deal with in the workplace, often without any formal training or
guidance. Recognising that many assistants have a wealth of experience
in the workplace, the course will build on existing practical
knowledge and provide reinforcement of the basic aims and principles
of good archives and records management in all media. The course
objectives are:
1 To define and explore the fundamental archive and recordkeeping
terms and concepts
2 To introduce the techniques and processes used to manage current and
semi-current records
3 To cover the basic principles for creating and using archival
finding aids
4 To give an overview of the national and international archive map
5 To consider the most important legislation, regulations and
standards for best practice affecting archives and records management
6 To review objectives and techniques for customer care
7 To provide and assess the requirements for preservation of archives
The two days are separated by a month to enable participants to
process and reflect on what has been covered in the first part of the
course. However, to maintain momentum, there will be an interim
assignment for participants to work on in preparation for the session
on legal, regulatory and standards issues at the beginning of the
second day.
The course is delivered and facilitated by Margaret Crockett and Janet
Foster of the Archive-Skills Consultancy with guest speakers as
appropriate. Although the two day programme is very full the class
will be encouraged to actively participate through exercises and
discussion.
A course handbook will be provided, which contains:
supporting notes on all main sessions
a select bibliography
a glossary of archive and records management terms
useful contacts
participants list and speakers details
Participants are encouraged to prepare for the course by formulating
questions or issues that have arisen in the course of their work, for
consideration by the speakers and the class as a whole.
The course fee of £282 (£240 plus £42 VAT) also includes lunch (with
vegetarian option; please let the directors know if you have any other
special dietary needs) and tea and coffee.
